Enjoying Family Fun on a Budget

Having quality family time together doesn’t need to involve spending lots of money (sorry kids!). The Love My Money team has some money-saving tips:

Entertainment & Events

GrabOne, Treat Me and Book Me websites are worth looking at for discounts on interesting activities.

Eventfinda is a good website to search for events on throughout New Zealand.

Your local Council website will probably have an events guide, including low-cost or free things to do. And most libraries provide activities for children throughout the year.

Family Times has a ‘What’s On’ Guide for events in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The Great Outdoors

Even if not everyone’s keen initially, getting fresh air, exercise and getting outside together (and away from mobile phones and computers), is bound to be good for your family!

Walking, Tramping & Camping

The Department of Conservation website has ideas for family-friendly walks and tramps around New Zealand, and DOC campsites are very reasonably priced.

Explore New Zealand by bike - the New Zealand Cycle Trail website includes a list of the Top 10 Family Bike Rides in New Zealand.

Eating Out

Kids often want food when you’re out and about, which can really burn through your money! You can save by planning ahead and buying vouchers on websites like GrabOne, and Treat Me.

The Entertainment Book is popular for 2-for-1, and up to 50% off deals at restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets (and there’s a digital version as well).

First Table and Restaurant Hub have half-price meal offers. E.g. on First Table you pay $10 (sometimes less) to book an early meal, then you only pay half price for meals for 2-4 people!

Toy Libraries

Community Toy Libraries are a low-cost way to help keep children entertained with a variety of toys, without having to buy them yourself. Find a Toy Library near you

Our Top Tip

Creating priceless family memories is really about giving children time and attention … And that doesn’t cost a cent!
